A 63-year-old man, alleged to have robbed Morrisons petrol station in Newport earlier this year, has appeared in court for the first time today (Friday).
Julian Briscoe, of Dover Street in Ryde, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates, where no pleas were entered.
Due to the offence being an indictable-only offence, the case was sent straight to the Crown Court.
As first reported by Island Echo on 29th March, motorists woke up to the unexpected closure of the petrol station where, in the evening of the night before, a robbery had occurred.
It was at 19:29 that a man, who is now known to Island Echo as Julian Briscoe, allegedly entered the store and assaulted a member of staff.
It is alleged that Briscoe stole several goods, including tobacco and alcohol, before fleeing the scene.
Cordons were established around the kiosk and forecourt off Church Litten for the majority of the day, where police worked to investigate the incident.
Julian Briscoe will next appear at the Isle of Wight Crown Court on 28th September for a preliminary hearing.
Until then, he has been released on bail with the conditions of not contacting the shopkeeper/victim and not attending Morrisons Petrol Station, Newport.
