An historic Isle of Wight wedding and events venue could have 84 roof mounted solar panels installed on its west, east and south wings.
The plans from The Northwood House Trust for Northwood House in Cowes aim to reduce its operating costs and carbon footprint to support the stately home’s continued use, LMA Heritage Consultancy has said.
A Design, Access and Heritage Statement says the proposal has been located and detailed specifically to avoid harm to parts of the landmark justifying its Grade II* designation – denoting particularly important buildings of more than special interest.
Northwood House was built in the early 19th century and extensively enlarged from 1837 onwards, according to Historic England.
LMA Heritage Consultancy said:
“The great majority of the array is concentrated on the West Wing, the area of lowest significance identified in both the Historic England list description and the Statement of Significance.
“The proposal is considered to result, at most, in a very limited degree of harm (well short of substantial harm), which is clearly and demonstrably outweighed by the public benefits of reduced running costs and carbon emissions for a well-loved, heavily used charitable and community asset.”
County Hall’s public consultation on application 26/01375/LBC finishes on 6th November, with a decision scheduled for 27th November.
