The sentencing of a Ryde man who admitted burgling a Wroxall convenience store has been delayed once again after he failed to attend a probation appointment.
Daniel Skittlethorpe, of Union Road in Ryde, admitted burglary other than dwelling, assault of an emergency worker and 3 counts of criminal damage when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court back in January.
The 34-year-old was due to be sentenced last week (Friday 17th July).
As first reported by Island Echo, in the early hours of 11th December, Skittlethorpe broke into Central Stores in Wroxall, using a a painted rock to smash a window. Splatters of blood were seen on the floor of the shop where Skittlethorpe had caught himself on shards of broken glass.
Once inside, the 34-year-old stole alcohol, 3 vapes and £104 in cash. The goods stolen totalled around £184.96.
In the hours following the break-in, a Police cordon was erected around the crime scene and detectives from Newport CID were called in to examine the crime scene.
Skittlethorpe was arrested the following day and soon charged.
Prosecuting, Liz Miller, told the court last week that despite previous adjournments for the completion of a pre-sentence report, Skittlethorpe had again failed to attend a probation meeting and thus no report was ready for the sentencing bench.
Eva Ford, defending her client, explained to Magistrates that the 34-year-old had a chaotic few weeks during which he moved addresses and therefore did not receive word of his appointments.
Ms Ford- who said her client had “completely forgot” about the probabtion appointment reassured the bench that Skittlethorpe is in the process of receiving treatment for his depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis and alcoholism and is also working towards rebooking an ADHD assessment.
Despite his probation officer telling the court he is “high risk” and “dangerous” when he consumes alcohol and doesn’t take his medication, they agreed with that the case should be adjourned for a second mental health treatment requirement.
Magistrates said they were in a “dilemma” over the case’s third adjournment, however, ultimately they agreed.
