More than 80 members came together for a weekend of golf, friendly competition and fundraising as Westridge Golf Club’s annual Captains Day celebrations raised over £600 for charity.
The weekend began on Saturday with the traditional Battle of the Sexes, which saw the Ladies’ team, bolstered by the club’s junior golfers, take on the Men in a closely fought contest.
Captained by Past Captain Lorraine Swallow, the Ladies battled back to force a draw after winning the final match 2-up. The overall result finished level at 5½-5½, meaning the Men’s team, led by Vice Captain Mel Probyn, retained the trophy as the previous holders.
Sunday’s Captains Day, hosted by Co-Captains Mark Royl and Helen Whittaker, alongside Junior Captain Alfie Boxall and Senior Captain John Clenton, featured a fun-filled Vegas Scramble with unusual putting implements, bonus tees and protected pin positions.
Glen Winnard, Claire Matejowsky, Margaret Abbott and Ken Beamish claimed victory with a winning nett score of 24, narrowly edging Jas Royl, Chris Royl, Jill Prouten and Malcolm Prouten on countback after they also returned 26 nett. Phil Brennan, Bob Singh-Bansi, Frank Brazier and Walter Mallinson finished 3rd with 26 nett.
A post-match buffet, organised with the support of Helen Whittaker, the Royl family and the Boxall family, rounded off the weekend’s celebrations.
Alongside the golf, a raffle and putting competition helped raise more than £600 for the Captains’ chosen charities.
