The life, music and humour of much-loved Isle of Wight musician Simon Gooden will be celebrated in a special one-off production at this year’s Ventnor Fringe.
The Man in the Moon – The Story and Songs of Simon Gooden will be performed at St Catherine’s Church, Ventnor, on Thursday 23rd July, bringing together friends, family, fellow musicians and Fringe audiences to honour one of the Island’s most distinctive musical talents.
The hour-long production is a one-man play with live music, starring acclaimed Isle of Wight actor Olly Fry alongside Simon’s former band, Watevva.
Simon had originally hoped to perform the show himself, but sadly died before it could be realised. Determined to fulfil his vision, his family and friends have brought the production to life in his memory, weaving together the stories he told, the songs he wrote and the humour for which he became so well known.
Originally from Wagga Wagga in New South Wales, Australia, Simon moved to the Isle of Wight in 1993 with his wife Kate, who is from Bembridge. The couple ran the village bakery and laundry for 14 years before later settling in St Lawrence.
Away from music, Simon was also well known to many Islanders through his work running Randall’s Taxis in Ventnor.
The production promises an evening of music, laughter and reflection, sharing colourful tales from Simon’s life alongside his original songs.
Whether audiences knew Simon personally, enjoyed his music over the years or simply remember a taxi journey with him, The Man in the Moon offers an opportunity to celebrate the life of a much-loved Island character.
The performance forms part of this year’s internationally acclaimed Ventnor Fringe Festival.
Proceeds from downloads of Simon Gooden’s music will be donated to the Isle of Wight Kidney Patients Association.
