Police have descended on central Newport tonight (Sunday) with cordons erected at both the bus station and on a residential street elsewhere in the town.
Bowling Green Lane, which runs from the bus station to Upper St James’ Street, has been sealed off at either end following an earlier, serious incident.
It’s thought that activity at South View, off Trafalgar Road, is linked to the continued presence at Newport’s bus station.
At South View, residents are being told to stay inside their properties as Police conduct a search of the local area.
The road is cordoned off at either end and a local dog handler is searching the streets – potentially looking for any discarded items.
It is unclear at this time if the landing of the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance at St Mary’s helipad a short while ago is connected to the ongoing situation.
Tonight’s incident is of such significance that detectives from Newport CID have already been drafted in to investigate the circumstances.
UPDATE @ 22:20 – Rumours are circulating of a knife-related incident with 2 people having received injuries; 1 stabbed and another slashed across the face.
However, Police have not yet commented on tonight’s large scale response.
Cordons at both Newport Bus Station and South View have now been removed, suggesting there is no forensic examination of either potential crime scene required.
UPDATE MONDAY – Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that a knife has been seized and 3 people have been arrested.
