A suicide prevention charity is thousands of pounds better off thanks to the fitness of 7 Island rugby players.
The Hurries 4 Change team from the Sandown-Shanklin Rugby Club completed the 3 Peaks Challenge of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 22 hours, 48 minutes…over an hour inside their 24-hour target time.
Youth suicide prevention charity Papyrus UK will benefit from the fundraiser…which took place last Friday-Saturday (19th and 20th May)
The team of Sam Tyson, Sam Rees, Sam Dawson, Tom Marriott, Rich Brownrigg, Ross Simpson and Will Baxandall worked together to keep spirits up, even on the snow-covered peak of Ben Nevis.
The support drivers were Paul Tyson and Hurricanes coach Andy Stewart.
The team received sponsorship from Wightlink and The Way Forward Programme.
Phil Delaney, Wightlink commercial director, said:
“Well done to all concerned. This was a great effort and to beat the target time by more than an hour was even more impressive.”
Sam Tyson, Hurricanes captain, said: “We have managed to raise of £4.5k for Papyrus, smashing our original target of £1.5k.
“The challenge went well, it was very hard work and at times the team had to really dig deep to make the time of 24 hours.
“But we all managed, and we’re so grateful to everyone’s support and donations. We’ve raised lots of money for a really important cause.
“We’d also like to thank our sponsors Wightlink and The Way Forward Programme for helping us with our travel.”
