Over 250 local people turned out in force on Sunday 20th March at the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile in Seaclose Park, alongside continued donations at Sainsbury’s stores across the Island.
The day was a massive success with friends and families joining together to go the extra mile for Sport Relief 2016. There were some great costumes on display including a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, Buzz Lightyear and The Hulk. With a real friendly atmosphere many families ran together grandparents with grandchildren, babies in prams, and even the family dog made their way around the course. One ‘miler’, Simon Randle truly did go the extra mile by completing his very own triathlon, swimming one mile, cycling two then finishing with a three mile run around the course all in aide of sport relief.

“It was a fantastic day! Watching the community come together to support such a great cause was brilliant! We feel very proud knowing that the money raised here today will help people living unimaginably tough lives right here on the Island and across the rest of the UK as well as some of the world’s poorest countries.”
Meanwhile customers at Sainsbury’s West Cowes have helped raise £1540.50 this year following a series of events and donations made in store. A quiz night was held on 23rd March to round up the store’s Sport Relief fundraising.
Sainsbury’s Newport raised a massive £14,937.
The store helped to raise money for the nationwide charity event by fundraising at both Redfunnel Terminals over the Sport Relief weekend, 18th – 20th March. They also had a static bike and rowing bike in the store’s foyer for colleagues to peddle enough miles to reach the retailer’s Store Support Centre in Holborn, London, and back.
The store’s Local Charity of the Year, Ability Dogs 4 Young People, who have received funding from Sport Relief in the past, supported the fundraising efforts over the weekend by demonstrating the amazing training skills the dogs receive.
On March 13th, colleagues from the store joined the region’s Operations Manager Darren Noonan on a bike ride around all Sainsbury’s stores on the island and clocked up a 56 round mile trip.
Paul Dyer Store Manager at Sainsbury’s Newport Isle of Wight said:
“I’m really proud of my colleagues and the amount of money we raised for Sport Relief this year. I’d like to thank our customers for their support. My colleagues love getting behind the fundraising activities and we know we’re going to make a difference to such a fantastic cause.”
