An event to discuss how symptoms of neurological conditions can be managed in the community has been hailed a success.
More than 20 GPs and other healthcare professionals as well as representatives of local support groups attended the event at St Mary’s Hospital organised by the Island Neurological Network, a voluntary umbrella organisation that connects those on the Island living with a neurological condition, their family and friends, with the support, information and advice they need.
Speakers at the event included Dr Julian Furby, Consultant Neurologist; Emma Denman, Speech and Language Therapist and Dr David Isaacs, lead GP for IW Clinical Commissioning Group and lead practitioner at the Earl Mountbatten Hospice. Also present was the Island’s newly-appointed appointed Stroke and Rehab Consultant Dr Mehran Maanoosi together with representatives of local support groups including the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Parkinsons UK, the Motor Neurone Disease Association, Huntington’s Disease Association, Headway and Myaware.
The evening included a discussion session covering a range of issues from symptom control to support people to plan ahead for the future, chaired by Dr Annette Scivier who helped establish the Island Neurological Network.
Topics covered during the evening included the management of motor neurone disease, speech and swallowing difficulties and end of life care.
Speaking on behalf of the Island Neurological Network, Annette said she was delighted both with the number and variety of people attending the evening and the quality of discussion.
“The evening was very successful and the feedback we received from everyone who was there was very positive,” she said. She added: I think everyone left with an enhanced understanding of who does what in the care and support of those affected by neurological conditions on the Island.
“I was also delighted that doctors from several disciplines wanted more training on neurological conditions and I understand it will be included in the next GP Refresher course.”
