The popular Umbrella Tree in East Cowes was set free from its barriers last week. Residents gathered in the town centre on Friday (12th April) as the barriers – which have surrounded the tree for some time – were taken down. An inspection of the tree carried out for the Isle of Wight Council in 2017 found that the large weeping ash had a fungal infection. For several years, it has been threatened that the tree should be felled. Some 10 months ago, fencing was erected around the tree that stands outside East Cowes Liberal Club. Speaking on the day of the tree’s release, Councillor Karl Love said:
“Finally, after 10 months of captivity, the Umbrella Tree is going to be set free later today after a wonderful effort by the Friends of East Cowes Umbrella Tree and East Cowes Community Partnership worked together to raise funds and sort out the many technical issues.”

Should have just cut the eyesore down.
Good it’s sorted, now what’s with the crap crowd control fencing round one tree and stump outside county hall that’s been there more than two years ! Also along Fairlee Road there is a building with Council Sign saying Children’s Service’s Main Entrance,in full view to public – it’s not been Children’s Service’s for a decade and last used as a contact centre some 4/5 years ago – Worrying that the time it’s taking for council just to remove 4screws has taken so long!. Everything from fixing parking machines to SEN assessments and answering phone is far to long.
