Wight Tri member Chris Till recently took on 1 of the toughest Ironman events in the calendar: Ironman Wales 2023 in Tenby, Pembrokeshire – a true test of physical and mental resilience.
Chris finished the 2.4 mile (3.86km) swim in a new personal best time of 1:09:07 (1:41 min/km) for the full distance.
The Isle of Wight triathlete suffered numerous punctures on the 112-mile (180.25 km) bike leg. This was unfortunately a common occurrence during the race, and every time he hit a rough section of road, a pothole or a cattle grid, the rear tyre would deflate. He went through 5 CO2 cartridges total (2 of which were donated by a fellow athlete).
Chris finished the bike in 6 hours 11 minutes with an average speed of 29.1 kmph, well down on his expected time.
The Island Ironman competitor completed the 26.2 mile (42.2 km) marathon in 4 hours 27 minutes at a pace of 6:21 min/km. As he approached the finish line, a mixture of exhaustion and elation washed over him and he found the reserves to break out into a full sprint.
Crossing the finish line, Chris felt a profound sense of accomplishment, knowing he had conquered not only the course but also the unexpected obstacles along the way, and he cannot wait for the next challenge.
Chris finished the Ironman event in an overall time of 12hours 9minutes and 53 seconds. He came 66th/224 in the 30-34 age group, 229th/1450 male finisher overall, which was still a remarkable achievement even without having his mechanical problems.
