Terry Smith completed 142 miles for England after earning a wildcard place at the Four Nations Backyard Ultra Championships in Northern Ireland.
The Isle of Wight ultrarunner produced a remarkable performance at the Four Nations Backyard Ultra Championships at Florence Court in Northern Ireland, completing 34 yards and covering a total of 142 miles.
Smith, who was selected as a wildcard for the England team, finished ahead of the entire Welsh and Irish teams, as well as 8 of the 10 Scottish team members, in an event featuring some of the strongest backyard ultra runners from across the home nations.
The unique format requires competitors to complete a 4.167-mile lap every hour, with the race continuing until runners are no longer able to answer the bell for the next lap.
After more than 40 hours awake and with just 25 minutes of sleep, Smith eventually brought his race to an end having completed 34 consecutive laps.
Terry said:
“To represent England was a huge honour and I’m delighted with how the race went.
“Completing 34 yards and 142 miles at this level was something I’m incredibly proud of, especially as a wildcard selection.”
The performance is one of the strongest of Smith’s running career and strengthens his credentials for future England selection.
Following the event, the Island athlete thanked his crew, family and the many Islanders who followed his progress throughout the race.
He also expressed his gratitude to a number of local businesses whose support helped him travel to the championships, including White Windows, Electrical Solutions, Metro Rod, Love Running, Will Squibb Boat Builders, Lifeline, Island Imperial Roofing and Red Funnel.
Terry added:
“Without the support of these businesses, opportunities like this become much more difficult.
“Their backing helped me get to the start line and represent both England and the Isle of Wight on the international stage, and I’m extremely grateful for their support.”
The achievement marks another significant milestone for the Isle of Wight endurance athlete as he continues to compete at the highest levels of the sport.
