A Ryde man who stole from shops, targeted members of the public and used stolen bank cards during a 6-week crime spree has been jailed.
Kieran Thompson, 30, of Harding Road in Ryde, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week, where he admitted making off without payment, criminal damage, 7 counts of theft and 4 counts of fraud by false representation.
The court heard that the offences were committed between 29th April and 13th June 2026.
Thompson’s offending included stealing a wallet from a car before using the victim’s bank card to purchase goods in Newport, as well as making off without paying a £41.90 taxi fare from Lake to Ryde.
The 30-year-old also admitted using another person’s bank card to buy items from JD Sports and McDonald’s. He stole a purse from a woman in Ryde, a tobacco pouch from a woman in Shanklin and cash from 2 other victims.
Shop thefts from Tesco Express, The Co-op and B&M were also admitted.
Defending, Oscar Vincent, told the court that Thompson had been on remand since the middle of June and that much of the offending occurred during a period of instability in his life. He said many of the offences were “opportunistic and unsophisticated”, adding that Thompson had told him his “mind is back together”.
Magistrates deemed the offending had passed the custody threshold and sentenced Thompson to a total of 4 months and 10 weeks in prison.
