A scheme to turn an ex-coastguard service station on the Isle of Wight into a commercial art gallery is back with planners after a prior application was withdrawn.
Brett Walpole of Medium Art has filed plans for a change of use of the Needles Station on Lanes End in Totland, with associated building alterations, roof mounted solar panels and landscaping.
The premises will feature exhibitions with paintings and sculptures by local, national and international artists and offer works of contemporary art for sale, according to the applicant.
Mr Walpole said:
“The building was a public service and the coastguard’s building is a well known and accepted part of the landscape. The proposed changes are intended to be pleasing aesthetically and the public value of an art gallery on the Island is hoped to attract inward investment and cultural evolution.
“The gardens and planting around the building are designed to highlight the sustainable and environmental aspects of this site, with One Horse Field and the beautiful Totland Bay coastline within easy walking distance.”
He told planners there is parking for up to three vehicles and working hours will be between 09:00 to 17:00, with ‘no disruption’ to surrounding residents.
According to Mr Walpole’s application form, the site is vacant and the station is currently being used as storage for garden tools and a car.
The Isle of Wight Council’s public consultation on proposal 26/00994/FUL ends on 7th September and a decision is due on 25th September.
