A Sandown shoplifter, who breached 2 suspended sentence orders after stealing alcohol and chocolates from Tesco Express in Lake, has avoided jail.
Matthew Sutherland, 41, of Fitzroy Street in Sandown, admitted a pair of shoplifting matters when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates earlier this week (Tuesday).
Prosecuting, Cristiane Finlay, told the court that on the 14th June 2026, Sutherland entered Tesco Express in Lake and stole 2 bottles of ginger wine and 7 cans of premixed gin and tonic. The goods – to the value of £30 – were recovered.
Later in the day, Sutherland entered the store again and stole a family box of Maltesers to the value of £6.90.
By committing the offences, Sutherland was in breach of not one, but 2 suspended sentence orders imposed by the Magistrates Court.
Defending Sutherland, Oscar Vincent, told the court that his client was engaging well with probation and other professionals and that he was in supported accommodation provided by charity, Two Saints.
After around 30-minutes of deliberations, magistrates opted not to activate the suspended sentence orders and instead marked them with a £30 fine and an additional 15 rehabilitation activity day respectively.
Sutherland was fined £40, ordered to pay £85 costs, £6.90 compensation and a £16 surcharge fee.
Cant jail him as they need the space for hurty worders.
Funny how the Labour regime doesn’t mention the possibility of releasing the hurty worders early to make room for real criminals.
The early release scheme does not list every offence that is eligible, only the ones that are not so the people you speak of would be eligible. Always a good idea to establish your facts before revving up your keyboard.

Ban the scrote from the shop, then next time, charge him with burglary, get a CPS(Criminals’ Protection Society)prosecutor with some balls and get bail refused.
