25-year-old Ella Furnell, who was found to be nearly 3 times the legal drink-drive limit after crashing her car into a ditch, has been handed a 40-month driving ban.
Furnell, of Colenutts Road in Ryde, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court having previously admitted a single charge of drink driving.
Prosecuting, Cristiane Finlay, told the court that on 13th February, Police were flagged down by a member of the public following a road traffic collision in which a Ford Fiesta ended up on its side in a ditch.
At the scene at the junction with Main Road and Firestone Copse Road in Havenstreet, Furnell was breathalysed, in which a reading of 103 was returned – nearly 3 times the legal limit.
This isn’t the first time that Furnell has appeared before the courts. As previously reported by Island Echo, she was handed a 17-month ban for a similar offence back in November 2024. By committing this latest offence, the 25-year-old was set to earn a minimum 3-year driving ban.
Defending the 25-year-old, Eva Ford said that Furnell deserved full credit for her guilty plea and that a pre-sentence report had been compiled.
After brief deliberations, Magistrates banned Furnell from driving for 40 months. She was also handed a 12-month community order with 10 rehabilitation activity days and a mental health treatment requirement attached.
Furnell was fined £80 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £114 surcharge.
For committing a similar offense and as a repeat offender, someone i know was given a five year ban and a hefty fine. Why is this sentence so light?
Repeat offenders should receive a lifetime BAN
they have obviously not learned from their previous mistakes
“THEY OBVIOUSLY DON’T RESPECT LAW AND ORDER!”
Anyone caught drink or drug driving should be issued with a
minimum £10,000.00 fine whether they are in employment or
on benefits.
PEOPLE ON BENEFITS GET OFF LIGHTLY
THIS WILL BE A GREAT DETERRENT, BECAUSE THEY THEN
WILL HAVE TO WORK IN THE COMMUNITY FREE OF CHARGE UNTIL THEY PAY THEIR FINE OF £10,000.
Eg cutting overgrown hedges, clearing up rubbish etc etc
So called authority vans can take them 7 days a week
from 8am – 6pm daily to carry out such tasks.
It will make the island a cleaner place and it will STOP
such numpties drink or drug driving.
It’s about time lifetime driving bans are issued.
Repeat offenders won’t STOP!, that is why they are
‘REPEAT OFFENDERS’
You cannot teach a dog new tricks.
Nearly 3 times legal limit ( 103 ) and fined a total of £80 ( + costs and Surcharge ), but someone who was only just over limit, ( 40 ), was fined over £1000, where’s the sense in that !!!!
