Beach accessibility equipment will once again be available for hire in Ryde this Summer, with a new online booking system launching as the service returns for its third consecutive year.
From 1st July until 30th August, a range of specialist equipment designed to help people with mobility challenges enjoy Ryde’s beach, sea and seafront will be available to book through the new website at www.rydebeachaccessibility.co.uk.
The initiative aims to provide greater independence and confidence for residents and visitors accessing the coastline.
Available equipment includes Hippocampe and Sandcruiser sand wheelchairs, Mobi-Chair and DeBug sea wheelchairs, a Wheeleez sand rollator and a Stabilo positioning cushion for wheelchair users.
All pre-booked equipment can be collected daily from the Lifeguard Station on North Walk between 10:00 and 18:00 throughout the summer operating period.
Visitors can also make use of more than 300 metres of accessible boardwalk installed at Harbour Beach, next to the Marina, and on the beach beside the Lifeguard Station near Canoe Lake. The boardwalk provides easier access across the sand, helping more people reach the shoreline.
A fully equipped Changing Places facility is located just metres from the start of the boardwalk at the Eastern Gardens Toilets. The facility includes a ceiling hoist – with users asked to bring their own sling – an adjustable adult-sized changing bench, a peninsular toilet, height-adjustable washbasin and privacy screen.
The Changing Places unit is now available all year round following its purchase by Ryde Town Council. It is open daily between 07:00 and 22:00 during the summer months and from 07:00 until 19:00 during winter.
The project has been supported by a number of local organisations, businesses and funders, including NaShers, Toucan Diversity and Hovertravel, who have helped develop the initiative since it was established in 2024.
Initial funding from Ryde Town Council, Isle of Wight Council, The National Lottery, Sport England and a 2024 Crowdfunder campaign enabled the purchase of the specialist equipment and establishment of the service. Ongoing delivery is funded by Ryde Town Council.
Ryde Town Mayor, Karen Lucioni, has said:
“Everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the freedom, enjoyment and wellbeing that comes from spending time at the seaside.
“We are helping to remove barriers and create a more inclusive beach experience for residents and visitors alike. We are incredibly grateful to our supporters and funders for helping us make this vision a reality.”
The facilities and equipment are expected to benefit local residents, visitors to the Isle of Wight and families seeking accessible leisure opportunities throughout the summer season.
