A van driver seen swerving, driving onto pavements and damaging street furniture in Newport earlier today (Monday) has been arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drugs.
At around 09:30 Police received several calls stating that a blue VW Caddy van was driving in a suspect manner in the Newport area. Witnesses saw the vehicle swerving all over the road, clipping a traffic island, driving on pavements and causing damage to various bits of street furniture. Island Echo understands that the damage caused left the German van with a flat tyre and its bumper hanging off.
Officers located the vehicle at the Towngate Retail Park in Newport, stopping the vehicle just outside Halfords. When asked, the driver said that they had taken something over the weekend. A roadside drugs wipe was conducted which returned a positive result for cocaine.
The driver was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink/drugs and driving whilst over the prescribed limit (cocaine). Blood samples have been taken and sent off for analysis.
The driver remains in custody at this time.
Taking to Facebook, PC Champney has said:
“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Don’t drive if you’re not safe to do so. It’s not complicated and unless you want to risk your own, or someone else’s life, it’s just plain reckless.”

Well done for catching such a moron,
keep our roads safe.
A long ban and heavy fine is the answer
These snort/swill bastards need jailing for 10 years for driving while unfit.20 years for endangering life and wrecking some one elses motor and causing injury to others and life for killing someone else. Law is an ass thanks to the do gooders and hand wringers.
Ah, the German van strikes again….
