The distribution of £5,250 from the Ukrainian Support Fund by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Community Foundation, in partnership with UK Community Foundations and the Freemasons’ charity, has supported vital services on the Island for those displaced by the war in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Support Fund was launched last year, following the invasion of Ukraine. Around the UK it has helped hundreds of charities and community organisations that are providing support for refugees arriving from Ukraine, supporting the direct delivery of services for individuals’ and families’ social integration in the UK.
2 community organisations on the Island received funding to support relief projects: Community Action Isle of Wight received £3,250 to provide free bus passes to Ukrainians arriving to the Island so that they can access essential services and help reduce social isolation.
MAD-Aid received £2,000 to provide a pop-up shop for essential items and a Saturday club to help Ukrainian people meet Islanders.
Victoria Dunford, MAD-Aid Founder and CEO, has said:
“I never want to wake up the way I did last year, to the echoes of bombs – and I was far away, in another country. It’s far from finished. Thousands of family lives broken and damaged. Children left without parents, and parents who lost their children.
“Thanks to the support of the Isle of Wight community and a grant from HIWCF, we are managing to offer ongoing support to Ukrainian mothers, children and teenagers living on the Island. We are offering them space and help to meet every Saturday and enjoy celebrations such as Mothers’ Day.”
Jacqui Scott, HIWCF CEO, adds:
“Although a year has passed since the invasion of Ukraine, its impact will last for many years to come. The work being done by community organisations on the Island and throughout Hampshire is helping to ensure these displaced individuals and families escaping a terrifying conflict and who are often traumatised get the help they need from within the caring communities of the Isle of Wight and Hampshire.”

Maybe they should help the homeless people on the island first instead of a country filled with neo nazis
No Bob, they won’t do that as there is no virtue signalling kudos in it.
Yet OUR women and children STAYED in this country during WW2 and were there for there men. They worked in factories, fields and made a real contribution to the winning of the war.
This lot are just using this war as an excuse to better their lot in life by being ‘economic migrants’ with no real intention of going back once they discover they are given everything for free by our Government and the naive dim populace give even more.
Loyalty to their own nation is paper thin, so don’t expect any for the hand that now feeds, houses, clothes and treats these people for the rest of time.
Well said! We all know they will never go home should their country ever be peaceful again – life is too easy here…. They’ve not put a penny in the pot here but they will still get handouts if they fall on hard times. They’ve never had a penny of my money (other than taxes) and they never will get any handouts from me be it food clothes or a roof over their heads.
I think we should remember a few years back, when there was a tide of immigrants coming into
europe, that Eastern Europe were putting up barbed wire to stop them.
Also it amazing how many young men left Ukraine instead of fighting for their country.
Your last comment is simply untrue. They stayed and fought with unbelievable bravery, as they were required to do by law.
Some of the comments here are quite sickening.
Your the sick one!

are they taking the p*ss – how about these hand wringing do gooders give free bus passes to the highly taxed working population of the island that are struggling to pay their bills and cannot afford a weekly bus pass, let alone a car.
fed up with these people that virtue signal and do everything they can for foreigners, yet never bother about UK born and bred homeless, Uk homeless veterans on the streets – it annoys me that the state thinks it is ok to give a hotel or home to some illegal immigrant that arrived in a dinghy or some other sob story, yet is happy to let a Uk war veteran sleep rough in a shop doorway.
