Some 22 Christ the King College students have spent the last 2 years raising money for the trip of a lifetime to Peru.
The resourceful students have used a wide range of methods to raise funds: some using their hard-earned wages; some making various crafts and selling them at markets and events, whilst others have done regular car boot sales and sold refreshments at public events.
The students are now on their way to spend a month in remote villages, in the region of Cusco, high in the Andes mountains. They will be coping with altitudes of around 3500 metres and doing a variety of project work to help local communities.
Working with the Camps International organisation, the students will be helping to build a community meeting house, school and community infrastructure projects and planting pine forests to provide shade to grow mushrooms under.
Living amongst the local community, the students will have a chance to learn something about the lifestyle of the local Quechua people, and to experience their culture and traditions.
The biggest challenge is something that all of the students are really looking forward to; a five day trek in the Andes, hiking up to an altitude of 4500metres. The trek will culminate in a visit to Machu Picchu, something on every one of their ‘bucket lists’, especially as it is rumoured to be partially closing to the public in the near future due to the wear and tear of constant visitors.
No doubt this great adventure will be life-changing for all the students concerned, broadening their horizons, developing their independence and resilience whilst raising awareness of other cultures.
A big thank you to Harris-Fowler Solicitors for sponsoring the transport to and from the airport, enabling the students to travel together in the first and last stages of their adventure.
