Wight Tri athletes Helen Scholes and Trevor Prior travelled to Llandudno on Sunday for the Wild Horse Brewing Company Sprint Triathlon, incorporating the Welsh Triathlon Sprint Championships.
Scholes, originally on hand to support her brother‑in‑law, made a late decision to race. Moments before the start, organisers unexpectedly shortened the swim from 750m to 500m, prompting confusion among competitors.
The mass start proved turbulent, with both Scholes and Prior reporting heavy contact in the water.
The bike leg around the Great Orme brought steep climbs, strong winds and open‑road traffic despite the advertised road closures. Scholes recovered from a dropped chain, while Prior encountered a sheep blocking the course. Two collisions between cyclists and pedestrians added to the disruption.
A blustery two‑lap run completed the event. Prior finished in 1:44:43, improving on his previous outing, while Scholes secured second place in the Welsh National Sprint Championships (T60–64) with an impressive 1:26:20, supported by family throughout the course.
Wight Tri celebrated 2 strong performances in a challenging and chaotic race.
