Temporary traffic arrangements will come into place on a busy route between Newport and Carisbrooke today (Monday) to allow Island Roads to rebuild part of a damaged wall.
A 10-metre section of the wall at the junction of Carisbrooke Road and West Street is to be rebuilt following a traffic collision there earlier this year which saw a Nissan Micra go head-on into the wall.
The wall is in a Conservation Area and Island Roads will be using like-for-like red bricks in the repair.
During the work, which will begin today and last 2 weeks, a one-way system will be in place to allow traffic to travel through the local area without the need for temporary traffic signals. It will, however, mean that traffic will not be able to use Upper Pyle Street to enter Carisbrooke Road.
Project manager Luke Ward said:
“Obviously this is a busy area and we believe the arrangements in place will cause least disruption while allowing us to complete these important repairs as quickly and as safely as possible.
“We will do the work on the corner of West Street and Carisbrooke Road 1st which will allow us to relax some of the restrictions as soon as we can. We have set aside 2 weeks to complete the overall scheme but we will be working hard to complete it sooner if at all possible.
“We apologise for any inconvenience but it is important we make these repairs now to prevent further deterioration of the wall.”

The same conservation area where they knocked down historic buildings and built a load of flats on which are poorly maintained and not in keeping with the area.
One rule for us and one rule for council planning.
This says everything about what is wrong with the IOW and island roads in particular. two weeks for a ten metre section of wall. A private company would have the wall down in a day, a competant brickie could lay five metres easily in a day, so why two weeks, well judging by other works undertaken by island roads the answer is easy, they arrive late ,have a look at the job for an hour, then find a local cafe for breakfast, come back, spend half an hour on their mobiles updating their socials, then have a nap in the van and go home by 3-30.
You forgot the clipboard men !
if a car has hit the wall cars insurer should pay
It’s presumably a privately-owned wall so why is IR repairing it?
2 weeks to replace 10 metres of wall? Are they only working for 1 hour a day?
The Micra must built like a brick sh** house!
That will take a month, one doing all work, the rest looking on there phones and smoking.
