BAE Systems has donated 1 of its Cowes site vans to WightSAR – the Island’s voluntary Search and Rescue team – to support its important work on the Island.
The van will be used as a support vehicle to provide welfare facilities during search and rescue operations and will also be used at community and fundraising events.
The Isle of Wight Search and Rescue charity comprises a team of skilled volunteers who assist Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and other agencies in searches for vulnerable missing people on the Isle of Wight. The team is on call 24/7, 365 days a year and carries out searches in all weather conditions.
In 2022, the team carried out a total of 18 high-risk missing person searches across the Island searching terrains such as paths, fields, woodlands, and streams as well as urban areas and within buildings.
Dean Terrett, Chair of Isle of Wight Search and Rescue, has said:
“We are grateful to BAE Systems for the donation of the van which is already being put to use supporting the local community. Our volunteers pay for their own personal equipment, training and expenses and we are totally reliant on donations of equipment and fundraising to be able to continue the work we do.”
Scott Jamieson, Managing Director of BAE Systems’ Maritime Services business, adds:
“We are committed to supporting our local communities. Isle of Wight Search and Rescue provides an invaluable service to residents and visitors and members of our radar team in Cowes recognised the value our vehicle could provide. We were delighted to be able to respond to this great idea and donate the van for use in life-saving rescue work.”
WightSAR recently also acquired a brand new Incident Control Van, which is currently being fitted out with vital equipment and communications technology. It is expected to be operational later this year.

Whilst making weapons to kill and maim around the globe! Honestly, you couldn’t make it up!!
You might find that the Cowes site produces Radar and Defence Systems. Try remembering that next time you fly from one of the Uks airports.
I have no problems with them killing Putin’s raping and murdering filth.
Still won’t be able to successfully search for people though but it’s good that they have a bit of an upgrade to try and do it
