Professional Isle of Wight referee James Linington is to complete the 3 Peaks Challenge – climbing the highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales in just 24 hours – in aid of blood cancer charity Leukaemia Care.
James will be part of a group of Championship referees, who are showing their solidarity for coach Gary Willard, who is currently undergoing treatment for blood cancer.
The gruelling challenge will begin in the early hours of Wednesday 7th June in Scotland and finish the following day in Wales.
Leukaemia Care is dedicated to ensuring that everyone affected by the disease receives the best possible diagnosis, information, advice, treatment and support.
James Linington has told Island Echo:
“In 2016, the Select Group 2 Referees list was formed. The Group of Match Officials predominantly officiate in matches in the EFL Championship. Since the groups formation, 1 of our Referee Coaches, Gary Willard, has been crucial to our individual and group successes.
“Recently, we were all devastated to hear that Gary had been diagnosed with leukaemia. Over the years, Gary came to the Island as a guest speaker for the Isle of Wight Referees Association meeting. He also refereed the Isle of Wight Men’s football team in the Jersey Island games in 1997.
“The group immediately came together and wanted to show our solidarity and support for him. After weeks of discussions, it was decided that we would take part in a group fundraising event for Leukaemia Care.
“In June 2023, 25 Referees and Support Staff will take on The National 3 Peaks Challenge in 24 hours. This momentous challenge would most definitely be a real test of character for the group, but also a fantastic way to draw from our resolve and resilience to complete this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for such a good cause.
“To succeed, we will all have to come together to support one other. Each one of the team who will be involved is extremely excited about the challenge ahead.”
