UPDATED: Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward following a property fire in Newport this morning (Thursday), which has claimed the life of a 79-year-old man.
As previously reported by Island Echo, the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to Furrlongs, Pan at shortly before 05:30. Despite being on scene within just 4 minutes, the life of the elderly gentleman could not be saved.
The death is currently being treated as unexplained while enquiries are made into the cause of the fire.
Specialist Fire Investigation dogs from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service have been called in to examine the scene.
A cordon is expected to remain in place for the next few days.
Detective Chief Inspector Nick Heelan has said:
“Our enquiries are at an early stage and we are working with our colleagues at Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and the Arson Task Force to find out what happened.
“We would like to hear from any witnesses or anyone who has any information about what took place.”

UPDATE @ 21:24 – Furrlongs has now reopened to traffic in both directions.
It is thought the body of the deceased male has been removed from the property following a thorough scene investigation.
