Isle of Wight woman Charlotte Fisher has raised over £2,000 for the charity Bowel Cancer UK by completing the 106km Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge on Saturday (29th April).
Not only did Charlotte raise a considerable sum for a worthy cause, she was also the 1st woman over the finishing line, coming in 8th overall in a time of 12 hours and 37 minutes.
Charlotte was inspired to raise money for the cancer charity to remember her aunt Jane, who fell victim to bowel cancer.
Jane’s story demonstrates the importance of early detection and the impact that a GP’s decisions can have on a patient’s outcome. Charlotte’s aunt was let down by her GP on numerous occasions and her diagnosis came too late.
Charlotte’s run was not only a personal challenge, but also an opportunity to raise awareness for early diagnosis of bowel cancer.
Charlotte has said:
“Yesterday was one of the best days of my life so far. I achieved a massive goal I have been working relentlessly towards for the past couple of months by crossing the line of the ultra challenges Isle of Wight 106km.
“This moment was made even better by winning 1st female and coming 8th overall – something I would never have even dreamed possible before I started training at the start of February.
“I don’t come from a running background – I’ve not raced before or am part of any clubs, so running for 12 hours straight with over 1800m of incline was the hardest physical and mental challenge I have ever set to take on, but it was made possible on the day by the foundations of my training plan and my amazing support team, so I want to thank every one of those who made it out to see me/run parts with me!
“Catching up with the 1st woman who is an incredible athlete was such a challenge for me, as at 1 point she was almost half an hour ahead after the 52km rest point, but I felt I had my aunt who I lost to Bowel Cancer by my side for strength.
“I managed to surpass raising £2,000 for Bowel Cancer UK, so I want to thank every single person who donated.
“I’m still absolutely in shock and on cloud 9 (not to mention in quite a lot of pain).
“To the hater on TikTok who said I’d run 50km and walk the rest, how’s 1st female for you?”
