UPDATED: Residents in parts of Ryde are without water this morning (Sunday) due to a burst pipe, which is forcing water up through the pavement on West Hill Road.
Thousands of litres of water is rising up to the surface, running down the road and into the gardens and garages of at least 2 homes.
The water is flowing into nearby Park Road, where drains are consuming the majority of the fast-flowing water.
Locals have used bricks and sand in an attempt to divert the majority of the water to the gutter, but the efforts are only working to an extent.
Southern Water were informed of the incident at 06:15 and say an engineer is en-route.
It is unclear at this time just how many homes and businesses are affected.
UPDATE @ 09:28 – Work is underway to repair the damaged 4-inch main.
A total of 120 properties are still without water this morning, but that is a reduction from the 400 homes initially affected.
A spokesperson for Southern Water has said:
“Unfortunately, around 40 properties in West Hill Road are still without water However, now that we have isolated the main, we can safely excavate the pipe and carry out the repair.
“We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused and will work as quickly as possible to complete this emergency repair and restore supplies as quickly as we can.”
