East Dene in Bonchurch, the Grade II* listed former hotel, wedding venue, youth activity centre and school, has been put on the open market for £2.5million. The 7.8-acre property, described as a historic landmark marine villa with glorious sea views over the English Channel, has appeared online listed with Knight Frank and Spence Willard. Boasting 8,847sqft of living space with 6 bedroom suites, 5 reception rooms and a further 7,211sqft of ancillary accommodation, the property won’t be an easy sell – especially given its proximity to the recent major landslide in Bonchurch. East Dene has been put up for sale on the basis of achieving consent for residential use from the Isle of Wight Council. Earlier this month it was revealed that planning permission is being sought by Robert Camping, from Wonder House Group and Joesph Allnatt Centres, to transform East Dene into a single house with guest and staff accommodation. The grand estate was previously the home of Victorian poet, Algernon Charles Swinburne and also of John Snowdon Henry MP.

Risky gamble buying that, in that unstable region of the island.
They might find someone with more money than sense though.
Very sad, unfortunately given what’s going on around the area it’s unlikely to sell. Building insurance has Sky rocketed, mine gone from £500 to over £1200,so god knows with this sort of value how much £12000/£15000 ?
Pity the residents of Godshill, miles from the landslips but with a Ventnor postcode.
A gorgeous property but the way Bonchurch and Ventnor is falling
apart, soon it will be unaccessable to get too.
I personally wouldn’t buy it for £500,000.00
Properties in such locations are a NO GO ZONE, so sad.
2.5 million!! They are off their heads!! Worth no more demolition money, the whole lot will be in the sea soon!
Such a shame the nay saying coffin dodgers got involved and had as much influence as they did. What could’ve been a thriving business bringing much needed money into the area and creating jobs for locals, is now most likely going to sit empty for years, falling apart, getting squatted or vandalised which will lead to the inevitable fire and demolition of the “Beautiful character building with so much history that we must preserve” that they fought so hard to stop being preserved and updated in a different role. Well done, pat yourselves on the back.
I welcome the fact it didn’t get the planning permission applied for especially now with Leeson Road no more, the traffic on other routes out of Ventnor is strain enough with the coming holiday season upon us. Like others have said who would want to invest directly in the area of the landslip?
