Access to Bembridge from St Helens has been restored in time for the long Easter Bank Holiday weekend, as resurfacing works are temporarily paused on Kings Road. Earlier this month, Island Echo reported on the concerns of local residents and businesses that Bembridge would be negatively affected by roadworks taking place on 1 of just 2 main roads into the village. Just a few days later, Island Roads confirmed the decision to re-open Kings Road for the Easter period – news that was much welcomed by locals. Ahead of schedule, Kings Road (which connects Embankment Road to the High Street) has fully re-opened. The carriageway was cleared of roadworks on Wednesday afternoon and is set to remain open until Tuesday morning, when work by Island Roads’ contractors will resume. In a statement issued earlier this month, a spokesperson for Island Roads said:
“The essential work at Kings Road is required to bring the quality of what is a busy road up to the required standard. “Planning such work is never easy and whatever time we choose there will, inevitably and unfortunately, be an element of disruption. In this particular case, we have had to work around other planned activity by utility companies on the diversion route. This has left us a narrow window in which to complete the works to avoid the summer season.
“Full road closures are required as this work will likely include the strengthening of the road’s foundations and this means deep excavations are likely. While this type of work should reduce the need for future maintenance, it is not safe to open the road in between shifts.“The road will be fully open over the whole Bank Holiday weekend from Friday 29/03/2024 – Monday 01/04/2024 inclusive”.

well that looks nice what about rest of it…
The next time they start maybe do some work they could of done that patch in a day terrible as most of the time no one was there working
They spend all day sitting in their vehicles eating,
they are work shy.
Bet the better than us people of the town still moan? Least us less wealthy from other towns can experience the new surface.
Well I for one won’t be going there!
Why have they left the bit nearest the camera looks like it is crumbling away and subsiding. Typical island toads . Quick fix or bodge job arfer job or no job atall.
Is that it?
That took over a week?
I said previously about how quickly Tesco’s car park got resurfaced a while ago. You could actually see people working there, in the rain too, no-one sitting around in vans. But, I guess that’s the difference when you have a commercial company like Tesco paying for it, possibly with time penalties too.
About time that Island roads and utility companies were financially penalised for taking too long with road closures.
Well they obviously haven’t finished, as stated in the article, but really it shows just how slowly these muppets work. Not so long ago, a team would arrive and sort out a whole street in a day/night using manual tools and a roller. Island Roads are taking the piss.
Island Roads are a national disgrace.
Well done to all at bembridge primary school for all the hard work laying that tarmac down …..oh wait just seen it was island roads work
For fuck sake you lot will moan about absolutely everything. The comments section on Island Echo filled with the contents of a festival toilet as usual. Do none of you ever get bored of moaning?
A rather minor and trivial point but why do they insist on calling it Kings Road? As a youngster who grew up in Bembridge, many years ago before the over-development began, I, and all who I knew, called that stretch of road Point Hill? Has it always been Kings Road? Or simply renamed by the well-to-do that live in Kings Close?
IE – any ideas?
