Isle of Wight darts star Keegan Brown should hold his head high after being knocked out of the Quarter Finals of the World Series of Darts Finals by Nathan Aspinall yesterday (Sunday).
Brown took a strong 6-1 victory over Simon Whitlock in Amsterdam on Friday evening to secure his place in the Last 16, where he faced defending champion Gerwyn Price.
But it was an effort just to get to that stage as his flight from Gatwick had been cancelled, forcing his wife, Roz, to drive him more than 6 hours to the Netherlands.
Saturday’s match against Price didn’t look favourable for 30-year-old Keegan, who was battling the Iceman’s 98.76 average vs his own season average of 89.85. However, the Islander focused on the opportunity ahead and clinched a shock 6-4 win, knocking last year’s winner out of the competition.
Buzzing from a massive career win, Keegan went into yesterday afternoon’s match against the World Number 5 with confidence, but The Asp’s skill and determination led to a respectable 10-5 defeat. Brown’s opponent proved his strength as Aspinall continued right through to the Finals, where he lost to Michael Van Gerwen 11-4.
A Quarter Final finish means that Keegan, who works full time at St Mary’s Hospital, walks away with £17,500 in prize money, taking his season winnings to around £41,000 – a drop in the ocean compared to the likes of Price and Aspinall who have secured around £500,000 so far this year.
