Fresh concerns have been raised over the future independence of the Isle of Wight Council after the Government announced a review of local government reorganisation plans, with Isle of Wight MP Joe Robertson warning that a merger with the mainland could once again be considered.
The Government has withdrawn decisions approving major council restructuring in Hampshire following new legal advice, while plans affecting a number of other areas are being reviewed and paused.
Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government Angela Rayner is expected to announce the review in Parliament.
The previous plans for Hampshire would have created 4 larger unitary authorities, with Southampton, Portsmouth, Basingstoke and other areas reorganised into new councils.
Those authorities had been due to hold shadow elections in 2027 before taking responsibility for council services in 2028.
However, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has now confirmed that decisions concerning Hampshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk have been withdrawn in light of new legal advice.
Plans covering 14 other areas, as well as Cambridgeshire & Peterborough and West Sussex, will also be reviewed and paused.
The change has prompted concerns about what the review could mean for the Isle of Wight, which has previously made the case to remain a standalone authority.
Joe Robertson MP has taken to social media to warn Islanders against assuming that the Isle of Wight’s position is secure.
He has said:
“Angela Rayner is reviewing local government reorganisation. That means the Isle of Wight Council could now be merged with the mainland.
“The Secretary of State refused to confirm otherwise, albeit she recognised our strong case to remain standalone.
“We must not be complacent that the Government won’t spring a merger on us. We now need to make the case for the Island all over again.”
The Government has not, based on the information announced so far, confirmed that the Isle of Wight Council will be merged with a mainland authority.
Ms Rayner is expected to tell MPs that she wants to ensure the reorganisation process is legally robust and examine whether existing proposals meet the priorities of the new administration.
As a result of the Government’s change in direction, local elections in May 2027 will take place using existing council boundaries.
Reorganisation in Surrey will not be affected, with the new East Surrey and West Surrey unitary authorities still due to go live in April 2027.
This Government are a complete and utter shambles. It seems that virtually every decision they make is subject to re-thinking and U-turns. Mind you, bearing in mind that the Minister in Charge of the Department does not exactly have an unblemished record in her personal dealings it hardly comes as a surprise that someone, somewhere has noticed a potential legal challenge to their so-called plans.
Who can respect a politician who failed to pay their
stamp duty whilst Jo Public have to pay theirs.
Politicians seem to be lawless individuals who don’t
deserve respect, one has to earn respect.
Bring it on, we may get cheaper fares, after all Islanders use
mainland NHS facilities.
that wont happen, cheaper fares, you make me laugh, the ferries are run by private companies. Islanders are FORCED to use mainland NHS because our hospital is underfunded.
Our hospital is not under funded, in fact it’s too big for the Islands comparatively small population. We travel to the mainland for operations because surgeons would be under employed if based here.
If this happens it might finally get the FULL funding
it should get.
Also the ferries should be nationalised.
Oh so once again Joe has jumped the gun and landed on theoretical conclusions.
Stop stirring the pot Joe and wait for tangible evidence. It’s a legal question that needs to be watertight in order to shore up every council in case of, er, rogue enemies of the state getting into power and selling off huge chunks of land to outside agencies whilst simultaneously getting us all to effectively pay rent to for the right to exist.

Or is this just an opposition MP desperately flailing around looking for an imaginary policy to oppose?
Having seen the abject failure of IWC to adequately represent the needs of residents, I wonder why anyone would oppose amalgamation with a more competent authority?

There is no quality in politicians of today,
they don’t and never will represent “US”!
They only come awake when it’s election time.
No brainer Rayner, what a total chav. One of Starmers closest chums is back and she is bitter and twisted and is ensuring she will cause as much damage as she can to the country as possible.
