Residents and visitors are being encouraged to discover two of Newport’s most important heritage attractions free of charge as part of this year’s Heritage Open Days celebrations.
The Isle of Wight Heritage Service will open the doors of the Museum of Island History and Newport Roman Villa across two special September dates, offering the public a chance to delve into the Island’s rich past without paying an admission fee.
The first event takes place at the Museum of Island History, housed within Newport’s historic Guildhall, on Saturday, 12th September, from 10:00 to 13:00.
Visitors will be able to explore exhibits charting the Island’s story from prehistoric times through to the present day, while enjoying a wider programme of Heritage Day activities taking place across Newport town centre.
A highlight of the day will be a unique immersive theatre walk celebrating the life and work of poet Charlotte Mew, created by StoneCrabs Theatre.
Beginning at 11am at the Yellowfin Propeller opposite Quay Arts, the guided experience will take participants around Newport as Mew’s story is brought to life through performance. The walk will conclude with a special presentation and visit to the Museum of Island History.
Free museum entry is available without booking, while tickets for the Charlotte Mew walk cost £10 and must be reserved in advance.

“Heritage Open Days gives people a wonderful opportunity to connect with the Island’s fascinating history and heritage completely free of charge.
“Whether you’re discovering the Museum of Island History for the first time or stepping into the story of Charlotte Mew through this unique theatrical experience, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”
A week later, Newport Roman Villa in Cypress Road will welcome visitors on Saturday, 19th September, from 10:00 to 14:00.
Guests will be able to step back more than 1,700 years and explore the remains of the 3rd-century Roman farmhouse, which was first discovered 100 years ago in 1926.
The site features a preserved Roman bath suite, hypocaust heating system and Roman-style garden.
Free guided tours led by heritage experts will be available at 10:30, 11:15, noon and 12:45, although visitors are also welcome to explore independently throughout the day.

Heritage Open Days is England’s largest community-led festival of history and culture, bringing together thousands of volunteers and organisations each September to celebrate local heritage, traditions and stories.
