Helen Whittaker’s USA team have retained the Westridge Ryder Cup after holding off a final-day fightback from Europe to secure a 15½-12½ victory.
The annual 2-day contest was played at Westridge Golf Centre over the weekend of 5th and 6th September, with a mixture of team and singles matches deciding the outcome.
Day 1 saw players compete across 9-hole betterball and 9-hole foursomes matches, with Ladies Captain Helen Whittaker’s USA side taking control of the competition early on.
USA finished the opening day with a commanding 9-4 advantage, leaving Vice Captain Mel Probyn’s Europe team with plenty of work to do in Sunday’s singles.
Europe responded strongly and won the second day 8½-6½, but the comeback was not quite enough to overturn the overnight deficit.
USA therefore retained the Ryder Cup with an overall 15½-12½ victory.
Elsewhere at Westridge, the September Par competition was held on Wednesday, with Phil Brennan taking Division 1 on countback after finishing level alongside William Humphries.
Jeffrey Foster and Melvyn Probyn both finished 1 down, with Foster taking 3rd on countback.
In Division 2, Steve Sansford secured victory on countback from Martyn Wakefield after both finished 1 down, with Melvyn Pratley also 1 down in 3rd.
The 9-hole Stableford, played across Friday and Saturday, was won by Gary Cass with 20 points. Rod Little finished 2nd with 16 points, while Bowy White took 3rd with 15 points on countback.
