Defending champions Whitecroft & Barton started their pursuit of a 4th successive Division 1 championship with victory on the first Saturday of the 2026/27 season.
West Wight knocked in 5 at Brading, Shanklin took Bay Derby honours and Osborne Coburg ran riot with 11 goals at Niton.
However, the afternoon was overshadowed by events at Binstead, where the match against Northwood St Johns was abandoned after Binstead & COB captain Darren Powell suffered a serious medical emergency.
W&B OPEN TITLE DEFENCE WITH WIN AFTER POIGNANT TRIBUTE TO STEVE RAYNER
Former W&B players gathered at Sandy Lane to remember former manager Steve Rayner before the champions opened their season against Bembridge & Vectis.
A minute’s applause was held in Steve’s memory before kick-off, after which W&B faced an immediate test against a Bembridge & Vectis side expected to challenge for Division 1 honours.
In an Island Echo readers’ poll ahead of the new season, 37% backed W&B to retain their crown, with West Wight attracting 17% of the vote and Bembridge & Vectis 15%.
Bembridge & Vectis threatened first in the 15th minute when Sam Kirby fired across the face of goal. W&B responded 4 minutes later, with Tommy Jackson shooting at the Bembridge keeper from a promising position.
The visitors struck first in the 27th minute when a corner bounced off Ryan Gregory and into the net (0–1).
W&B were level in the 36th minute through debutant Shay Dixon, who marked his first appearance for the club by finding the net with a shot from distance (1–1).
Tempers briefly flared 2 minutes later when a foul on Alex Wright sparked a minor altercation, with Wright, Harrison Taylor and Harry Mulholland all booked.
Harry Ovnik came close to completing the turnaround in the 39th minute, but his volley was saved by Flynn Beere. Bembridge & Vectis’ Alfie Snow and W&B’s Coner Lyon also went into the referee’s notebook before the break.

Bembridge & Vectis remained dangerous after the restart, with Ethan Dicker finding the side-netting before W&B went ahead on the hour.
Sam Cant headed the home side in front (2–1), before substitute Harry Mulholland doubled the advantage 10 minutes later with a header from 5 yards (3–1).
Cant sealed the win in the 81st minute with a rocket into the roof of the net to complete his brace (4–1).
Bembridge & Vectis continued searching for another goal and forced W&B goalkeeper Jamie Linington to punch the ball over his crossbar in the 90th minute.

West Wight, runners-up last season and expected to be among W&B’s strongest challengers this time around, made a flying start at Brading. Luke Phillips struck after just 1 minute, Joshua Daley doubled the advantage on 10 and Jude Millar made it 0-3 in the 20th minute. Dan Vale pulled one back for Brading on 33 before Aaron Bennett reduced the deficit to 2-3 in the 54th minute. West Wight responded almost immediately, with Millar grabbing his 2nd on the hour before Daley also completed a brace in the 70th minute. The result put West Wight top of Division 1 on goal difference after the opening round of fixtures.
Shanklin 3-2 Sandown & Lake
Shanklin claimed the first Bay Derby bragging rights of the season by edging newly promoted Sandown & Lake. Cory Sanderson opened the scoring after 21 minutes before Rob Iley levelled for the visitors on 27. Peter Wilson restored Shanklin’s lead in the 36th minute and struck again on 71 to make it 3-1. Temitope Adafin replied just a minute later as Sandown threatened a late comeback, but Shanklin held on for all 3 points.
Oakfield 1-3 Cowes Sports Reserves
Cowes Sports Reserves opened their Division 1 campaign by taking all 3 points at Oakfield. Morgan, Long and Fever-Norton found the net for the Yachtsmen.
Binstead & COB A-A Northwood St Johns
There were distressing scenes at Binstead Rec when Binstead & COB captain Darren Powell suffered a serious medical emergency.
Those at the ground rallied around the hugely popular Island football figure as emergency assistance was called, with Isle of Wight Ambulance Service crews rushing to the village at around 14:30.
The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was scrambled from its Southampton Airport base, landing on the football pitch at Binstead Rec as Darren received emergency treatment.
The Division 1 fixture was abandoned, with the air ambulance remaining at the recreation ground for around 45 minutes.

Niton 2-11 Osborne Coburg
Relegated Osborne Coburg produced the biggest win of the opening Saturday by hitting an extraordinary 11 goals away to Niton. The visitors were already 0-7 ahead at half time before adding another 4 after the restart. Sam Read and Carl Phillipson both scored twice, with Charles Flatman, Bradley Kenning, Theo Lewis, Jason Pengelly and Luke Stone also among those on target for Coburg. The emphatic victory sent Coburg straight to the top of Division 2 on goal difference.
Seaview 2-5 Newchurch
Newchurch hit 5 at Seaview to make an emphatic start to their Division 2 campaign. Riley Bates opened their account in the 32nd minute before Aaron Doncaster added another on 42. Bates struck his 2nd shortly after half time on 49, substitute Kirk Brogan found the net on 59 and Scott Parker completed Newchurch’s scoring in the 73rd minute.
East Cowes Vics Reserves 0-1 Ryde Saints
Ryde Saints took all 3 points from a tight encounter with East Cowes Vics Reserves at the JA Dempsey Community Stadium. The sides went into the break goalless before Thomas Brunton broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute, his strike proving to be the only goal of the game.
ECS 0-0 Newport Reserves
Two sides expected to challenge for the Division 2 championship shared the points, with ECS having topped the Island Echo readers’ pre-season poll on 33%. East Cowes Vics Reserves were 2nd favourites on 31%, while Newport Reserves attracted 18%.
