Islanders are in for another hot and sunny weekend according to local forecasters, but the seasonal weather brings additional risks to those enjoying everything the Isle of Wight has to offer.
Tomorrow (Saturday) will be a fine and mostly sunny day with light winds says IW Met Service. There is however the chance that some sea fog will develop and this could brush along the West and South coast at times, although it will likely be very localised and the overall risk is fairly low.
A little cloud may bubble up in some central parts of the Island during the afternoon but it should remain dry.
Temperatures are expected to sit around 25c to 28c although cooler as you move towards the coast in the West and South. Winds will be light.
As the weekend progresses everything is in place for a sunny Sunday with temperatures once again hitting the high 20s with light winds.
Top tips for keeping cool and safe:
• Shut windows and pull down the shades when it is hotter outside. You can open the windows for ventilation when it is cooler
• Avoid the heat: stay out of the sun and don’t go out between 11:00 and 15:00 (the hottest part of the day) if you’re vulnerable to the effects of heat
• Keep rooms cool by using shades or reflective material outside the windows. If this isn’t possible, use light-coloured curtains and keep them closed (metallic blinds and dark curtains can make the room hotter)
• Have cool baths or showers, and splash yourself with cool water
• Drink cold drinks regularly, such as water and diluted fruit juice. Avoid excess alcohol, caffeine (tea, coffee and cola) or drinks high in sugar
• Plan ahead to make sure you have enough supplies, such as food, water and any medications you need
• Identify the coolest room in the house so you know where to go to keep cool
• Wear loose, cool clothing, and a hat and sunglasses if you go outdoors
• Check up on friends, relatives and neighbours who may be less able to look after themselves
Those at the coast or on cliff tops should be aware of their surroundings, making sure to check tide times and not putting themselves in danger. More coastal safety information is available from HM Coastguard at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.
The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) is urging the public to stick to footpaths, bridleways and respect other users of the rights of way when out and about in the countryside.
