Work to redevelop the National Trust car park at Compton on the Isle of Wight’s Military Road, to meet the needs of visitors, has begun this week. The car park layout is being changed to make it more accessible and safer, using natural materials to mark out car parking spaces, and replacing the crumbling tarmac area with a new green space. A brand-new toilet block is also being created which will include 3 unisex cubicles, a larger accessible WC with baby change facilities, and a ‘Changing Places’ cubicle which will provide a hygienic and dignified space for those with complex disabilities. The block has been carefully designed in a modular fashion, allowing it to be relocated if and when cliff erosion requires it. The National Trust hopes that the improved facilities will encourage visitors to not only enjoy the beauty of Compton Bay beach, but also explore Compton Downs.

I’m glad to see that good money is being spent on something that will very soon fall into the sea. Very wise.
National Trust is very rich so can afford it, especially when they hike the parking charges up. And then think of the insurance claim when it does fall into the sea. Loss of revenue… Oops. Who knew?
More than likely, as with any reputable insurance provider will have assessed and underwritten for that case. I’m sure they are covered for public liability and any other cases, but loss of revenue from a landslip is unlikely.
Another money saving tip is to only use tinfoil for cooking.
Loss of revenue is covered in every policy, landslip or not, as is loss of the building.
No it isn’t. Loss of revenue is an add on that costs extra. Any underwriter providing cover in that area would exclude any and all claims arising from subsidence, heave or landslip. As a senior underwiter for Norwich Union for 30 years, I ought to know.
Really? And you know this how? NT may be asset rich as they have been bequeathed splendid properties to keep for the nation, but they are a charity and their income is by no means certain. I am one islander who is grateful to them for taking the trouble to invest in and improve this site, which is a popular point with locals and visitors alike.
They explicitly say it is modular so it can be moved when required due to coastal erosion….
Who is going to move it back every night? Or do the landslips come with prior warnings?
Evidently, coastal erosion is a slow gradual process at this low-lying site so there will plenty of time to assess when to move the toilets.
What a ridiculous idea, soon the Military Road will be closed
for good, and look at the state of the cliffs at Compton.
Surely the money could be put to use on better things.
It’s their money, they can spend it however they want. Does anyone tell you how to spend yours?
Why??
They opposed, iirc, plans to prevent erosion to military road and its saving.
Who the donald duck are these people?
It shouldn’t be allowed. It’s going to be a blot on a beautiful landscape. It’s not even going where the old one is tucked away, they’re moving it up the road, so it’s going to be an absolute blot on the scenery. And that stupid bit of turf on the roof is going to do nothing to disguise it or make it less obtrusive. They’re going to install a low barrier, thereby stopping any surfers or campers from staying over night, why? It’s a ‘dark skies’ spot where people love you camp and watch the skies at night. All this work will, of course, mean higher parking charges for everyone. The Council is a walk over. I hope someone burns the blooming modules down, I bet most people wee in the sea anyway!
