Michael Cooke from Bonchurch has succeeded in completing his collection all 59 animated Disney film DVDs in their original and uncensored versions – most of which he came across in Isle of Wight charity shops.
Island Echo last spoke with Michael at the end of January this year when he had amassed 56 of the 59 possible Disney animated classics. He still had 3 left to find: Raya and the Last Dragon, Mike mine Music, and Fantasia 2000.
Michael found the 3 missing films online, all for a total cost of just £11.25. However, disaster nearly struck when the parcel was delivered to the wrong address. He then attempted to have it delivered, but Royal Mail couldn’t find it as it didn’t have a tracking number.
Thankfully, the parcel eventually turned up on 1st March, despite having been ordered on 26th January.
The Ventnor man intends to collect further Disney films (like Pixar and other Disney studio releases) to create ‘Offline Disney+’: films that are uncensored and available to watch without and that can’t be pulled from online platforms.
Although Michael intends to collect all Disney films, there are a few he is not a fan of. His pet Disney hates include Princess of Thieves, The Three Lives of Thomasina (about a cat that dies repeatedly) and Victory Through Air Power (70 minutes of World War II propaganda to convince America to bomb its enemies).
Neither is he a fan of Song of the South, a movie about racism that continues to be an embarrassment for the company and has been locked away in the Disney Vault seemingly forever.
Michael says:
“For over 6 months, I have been collecting Disney DVDs, in particular Disney animated classic films. This started off as a joke between me and my partner, Kay. Most were brought from Isle of wight charity shops, including RSPCA, Samaritans, Mountbatten, Ability for blind dogs and Oxfam, costing from 10p to £2.
“Part of the challenge I set myself was to use Charity shops. I like to get stuck in and dig around for treasures either after work or on my days off.
“Out of the 59, I found 56 in the various shops. I decided to look further afield but still wanted it to be of benefit to a charity. I found a lot on an auction site, and the last 3 were Included (Fantasia 2000, Make mine Music, Raya and the Last Dragon), which I was very happy about.
“1 arrived, but there was no sign of the other 2. After lengthy emails, web chats and phone calls finally, 6 weeks after purchase, I got my hands on them.
“My collection of Disney animated classics is complete … For now. let’s see what Disney brings out next!”
