A Ryde business has shown its support for the island’s most vulnerable people by setting up a collection for a homeless charity.
The Yorkshire Building Society agency, based at Ward House Mortgages & Life owned by Mike Ward, is collecting tinned vegetables, pasta, rice and other non-perishables for The Pop-Up Soup Kitchen.
The Pop-Up Soup Kitchen is a mobile catering van established by Trevor Blaney last year to reach out to the increasing numbers of people sleeping rough on the island.
From his van he offers people hot food, warm clothes and donated food parcels as well as friendship and support.
Mr Blaney said:
“It has pleased me greatly that Mike Ward and his team embraced my charitable cause. He has worked with many charities over the years and it is inspiring that he has chosen to endorse mine.
“Because of people like Mike and the generosity of the island’s residents our homeless are not going hungry, are much warmer and as a direct result, not so socially abandoned.”
The collection started this month and already colleagues at the Yorkshire’s agency have been inundated.
Mike Ward, proprietor of Ward House Mortgages & Life, said:
“We’ve been amazed at the generosity people have shown towards the collection so far. The Pop-Up Soup Kitchen is a vital resource for people who have fallen on hard times and we’re really proud to be able to support their work in this way.”
The agency, on Union Street, is open for donations between 09:00 and 17:00 Mondays to Fridays, 09:30 to 17:00 on Wednesdays and 09:00 until noon on Saturdays.
