Shanklin Town Council has received 2 Platinum awards for the town’s new Tower Cottage and Falcon Cross toilets.
The National Loo of the Year awards were held in Birmingham last week and saw Shanklin commended for the quality of the new facilities, the standard of cleaning and the attention given to access for disabled people.
It’s the first time any town, parish or county council toilet on the Isle of Wight has received the award. Mayor Jon Gilbey travelled to a snowy Birmingham to collect the awards on behalf of Shanklin.
As many residents will be aware, these 2 locations were in dire need of an upgrade when the freehold was transferred from the Isle of Wight Council to the Town Council some 18 months ago, especially due to the high footfall and usage by locals and visitors to the town.
Over the past 4 months alone the total usage of these toilets has exceeded over 13,000 users, indicating how vital public facilities are to any busy town.
Work is now being undertaken to consider improvements to the other public toilets in Shanklin – where finances allow – taking into account their location, usage and maintenance issues.
