This is your weekly round-up of some of the latest court cases heard at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court.

- Phillip Long, 43, of Wellesley Way, Newport was fined £100 after admitting speeding at 44mph in a 30mph limit on Maybray King Way, Southampton. He was ordered to pay a £40 surcharge and received three penalty points on his driving licence.
- Anish Tiwari, 22, of West Hill Road, Ryde admitted drug-driving after being found over the legal limit for cannabis while driving in Sandown. He was fined £430, ordered to pay £85 costs and was disqualified from driving for 12 months.
- Alan Whiteman, 51, of Victoria Avenue, Shanklin admitted stealing grocery items worth £21.55 from the Co-op in Shanklin. He was fined £40, ordered to pay £21.55 compensation and a £16 surcharge.
- Ruby Owen, 29, of no fixed abode, Ryde admitted stealing four bottles of cider worth £11.96 from B&M in Newport. She was ordered to pay £11.96 compensation.
- Joann Poll, 46, of Station Avenue, Sandown admitted 4 shop thefts committed in Ryde and Sandown, involving steaks, washing liquid, cheese, ham, coffee, energy bars, alcoholic drinks and burgers with a total value of £138.05. She was ordered to pay compensation of £138.05.
- Alex Cooper, 27, of Oaklyn Gardens, Shanklin admitted stealing electric toothbrushes and replacement brushes worth £128 from Sainsbury’s in Cowes. He was ordered to pay £128 compensation.
- Cameron Warren, 38, of Nelson Road, Newport admitted stealing 2 bottles of alcohol from Morrisons in Newport. He was fined £40, ordered to pay £20 compensation, £85 costs and a £16 surcharge.
- Freya Jones, 37, of Fort Mews, Sandown admitted stealing salad and cake bars worth £4.25 from the Co-op in Sandown. She was ordered to pay £4.25 compensation.
- Kraig Crisp, 35, of Wilton Park Road, Shanklin admitted drug-driving after being found over the legal limit for cannabis while driving in Godshill. He was fined £553, ordered to pay £85 costs and a £221 surcharge, and was disqualified from driving for 16 months.
- Kamil Szelkowski, 41, of Reynards Place, Wootton Bridge admitted drug-driving after being found over the legal limit for cannabis while driving in Ryde. He was fined £120, ordered to pay £85 costs and a £48 surcharge, and was disqualified from driving for 12 months.
- Leon Gladdis, 29, of Nelson Road, Newport admitted failing without good cause to provide a sample for a Class A drug test while in police detention. He was fined £80 and ordered to pay £85 costs.
Drug driving on the island seems to be rife lately.
When will people realise drug or drink driving is dangerous

Why was one driver fined £553 and £221surcharge+£85 costs and the driver with the same offence get £120,£45+£85, both should be the same surely.
Because one has a job and can be raised by the courts and the other is a low life source of shit who has nothing…that’s why
That is why whether one is a benefit bum or a worker
the punishment should be the same = PRISON

Frustrating – we cannot afford to put more people in prison, where does the money come from.
Build more prisons, it creates employment and
makes the country a safer place.
The money to build prisons comes from our taxes
It is just that the Government don’t know how to
spend money correctly.
Every week I read this! Its a complete joke that the crime is so high and yet nothing really done to punish people, most weeks its the same people doing the crime.
Not one person given a prison sentence!
Your court,judges,and police are incompetent, the u.k should just seal off i.o.w and let all of you, just get on with it as your an embarrassment to the u.k.
Its no wonder people dont visit i.o.w anymore as you have nothing to offer but thefts,drunks, and drugs and uneducated people that just want to break the law.
Even when they break the law with a suspended sentence
they still get off Scott free when committing another crime

We need a new system
Crime here is lower than both the national average, and the Hampshire average.
Also, on breakdown of the crime itself, we have a much smaller incidence of crimes against the person (ie, violence etc); the crimes that make up the 82% of the national average are linked to the deprivation…drugs and shoplifting. Even burglary is at 60%, suggesting that those who steal do so to survive, not attack, and target shops instead of homes.
The major embarrassment we feel is being part of the UK, aligned with some mainlanders who don’t appear to have attend school regularly enough to understand punctuation and grammar when spouting their incorrect, unresearched non-facts, thus highlighting their own lack of education.
Finally…people aren’t given prison sentences a) because the severity doesn’t warrant it but even if it was, b) the prisons are already full up with mainlanders….
I do love the Islands version of buy now pay later.. Some might call it shoplifting, but it seems that all you have to do is steal a couple of hundred quids worth of stuff, sell it on, get caught, go to court and be told to pay what you owe to the shopkeeper. No fine, no punishment, just give them the money back, probably over a few months, and then do it all again… easy peasy. Christmas lay away scheme for scrotes. I can see the signs in Sainsburys… ‘Beat those Christmas blues, steal now, pay in June, July, August etc.’ So 2 years for throwing a traffic cone at a wall, and free credit for shoplifting.. 2 tier indeed.
It seems a no lose strategy, free credit by doing so
cheaper than having a credit card.
No additional fees to pay.
If the person does not get caught they are quids in,
if they get caught a slap on the wrist and only pay back
what they took.

Why is it that shoplifting offenders only have to pay for the cost of the items stolen, with no fines but motoring offenders receive a fine and pay costs etc? There appears to be a slight judicial imbalance of the scales somewhere!!
It must be that the Magistrate allows for the fact that some people steal because they and their family’s are not able to afford to feed themselves.
