A talented young Isle of Wight artist has won the Brave Island and Dimbola Museum & Galleries Experience Hendrix Art Competition.
21-year-old Zoe Caines impressed John Giddings with her vibrant digital portrait of the legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix, securing 2 tickets to this year’s Isle of Wight Festival.
Zoe also now has the opportunity to have her artwork displayed as part of the acclaimed Experience Hendrix Isle of Wight Festival 1970 exhibition.
Isle of Wight Festival organiser, John Giddings, said:
“I was impressed with all of the entries; but for me Zoe’s was a clear winner.”
Zoe said:
“This piece is a vibrant digital artwork capturing Hendrix in an expressive, almost abstract style, using bold neon colours against a deep black background.
“As both an artist and a guitar player, this was really fun to design and create! This piece emphasises movement and emotion over realism, giving the sense of being immersed in music. The piece is how I feel when I listen to his music.”
The competition was organised by Brave Island in partnership with Dimbola Museum & Galleries as part of the Experience Hendrix exhibition, which explores Hendrix’s enduring connection to the Isle of Wight and commemorates his legendary appearance at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival.
Joanna Macaulay, Creative Director of Experience Hendrix Isle of Wight 1970, said:
“We were delighted by the quality and creativity of the entries we received. Zoe’s work stood out for its energy and vintage vibe – it very much reminds me of posters from the 1970s!”
The Experience Hendrix exhibition was officially launched on 26th May and was attended by Isle of Wight Festival promoter John Giddings and Festival founder Ray Foulk.
The exhibition celebrates the life, music and cultural impact of Jimi Hendrix’s performance at Afton, through a unique collection of photographs, memorabilia, artwork and personal stories.
