One of Ryde’s hidden green spaces will once again welcome visitors later this month when Vernon Square Conservation Society hosts its annual Summer Garden Party.
The popular event, to be held on 27th June, will begin at 14:00, with gates opening from 13:30 at the historic Vernon Square Gardens in the heart of Ryde.
Entertainment at the annual fundraiser will be provided by the Vectis Brass Band, The RUG Band, and first-time performers – The Watch.
Visitors will be able to enjoy a selection of alcoholic drinks alongside tea and coffee, homemade lemonade, strawberries with Chantilly cream, and a wide variety of homemade cakes.
A super prize raffle featuring donations from local Isle of Wight businesses will again be one of the highlights of the afternoon. There will also be a second-hand book stall for those looking to stock up on reading material.
The event is the Vernon Square Conservation Society’s main fundraiser of the year, with all proceeds used to maintain the gardens and keep them open for public enjoyment.
The gardens were rescued from dereliction in 1986 when they were purchased by the then Vernon Square Preservation Society. Since then, volunteers – including prominent horticulturalist Mike Fitt OBE – have devoted their time free of charge to caring for the lawns, trees, flowers and shrubs.
Today, the gardens are regarded as a unique green space and are believed to be the only one of their kind on the Isle of Wight.
Entry costs £3 for adults, while accompanied children can attend free of charge.
Members of the Vernon Square Conservation Society also receive free entry.
Visitors are reminded that Vernon Square Gardens is a dog-free zone, although assistance dogs are permitted.
