The Isle of Wight Council’s Policy, Finance and Resources Committee has taken a major step forward to revitalise a prominent seafront location by empowering the local community to shape its future, by agreeing to transfer the ownership of the Pier Street site to Sandown Town Council.
The Pier Street site in Sandown has long been identified as a key regeneration opportunity by the council, but investors have faced ongoing delivery challenges in recent years due to the cost of potential public realm improvements and the requirement to maintain public toilets.
Sandown Town Council has stepped forward with a renewed commitment to the site, with plans to initially reopen facilities and explore longer-term regeneration opportunities in line with local priorities.
If any redevelopment proposal involves the removal of the public toilet facility, a suitable alternative facility will have to be provided either on or adjacent to the site.
Councillor David Llewellyn, chair of the Policy, Finance and Resources Committee, said:
“This locally led approach empowers the local community to take ownership of a key seafront asset and shape its future in line with local priorities.
“Under the agreement, the freehold of the Pier Street site will be transferred to Sandown Town Council, subject to the Town Council completing due diligence and adhering to conditions designed to protect essential public services.
“The transfer represents a positive and pragmatic step forward for the site, and we are confident that Sandown Town Council will create new opportunities for community-driven regeneration.”

Let’s hope Sandown Town Council do something good with it.
The last few years it’s been a FREE car park for vehicles
evading parking fees in a pedestrianised zone
ANOTHER ISLAND DISASTER WAITING TOO HAPPEN WITH
FAMILIES PUSHING PRAMS AND CHILDREN RUNNING AROUND
NEAR THE PIER!
There’s a grey/silver mini that is always parked there with a man sat inside with his sun visor to the side. He’s clearly surveillance because he is nearly always there.
I walk my dog to Shanklin from Sandown
along the revetment most days and it is rammed
with vehicles, beats paying to park.
I park up Beachfield Road I am surprised
that is still free parking. I would much rather
park along the Esplanade free of charge though.
You can park outside them toilets. There are no restrictions apparently. The yellow lines apply to the road, not the other side of the lines.
Pavement parking seems to be the norm on the island
Don’t worry about persons pushing prams.
LET’S HOPE THE SANDOWN TOWN COUNCIL STOP
PARKING IN SUCH LOCATION
IT IS A PEDESTRIANISED LOCATION WHERE CHILDREN
RUN AROUND
The place I am talking about isn’t a pavement and isn’t blocking anyone from anything. It’s a small concrete concourse area outside those toilets not on yellow lines with space for three cars. The pavement is beyond it. I don’t park there. Also the revetment is never “rammed with cars”. I see it daily.
Obsessed with his own agenda. I’m guessing he got a parking ticket once and never got over it.
Only 1 parking ticket. Lol, and the rest.
