Festival favourites Impromptu Shakespeare are returning to Ventnor Fringe this July with 2 improvised performances inspired by the Bard.
The award-winning comedy ensemble will perform at the Ventnor Exchange Arena at Flowersbrook, Steephill Road, at 15:30 on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th July.
Impromptu Shakespeare creates a brand-new Shakespeare-style play at every performance, with story, verse, romance, wit and double-crossing all improvised in the moment from audience suggestions.
The show has previously enjoyed success at the Edinburgh Fringe and Bristol Shakespeare Festival, appeared on BBC Shakespeare Live and won Best Comedy Event at Buxton Fringe in 2021.
The production has been praised by critics, with Pocket Size Theatre describing it as:
“Go and see this show. It’s intelligent, it’s funny, it’s all of the adjectives for brilliant.”
Broadway Baby has also described the show as:
“Simply sublime… side-splittingly hilarious improvised comedy worthy of the Bard himself.”
Each performance is different but remains unmistakably Shakespearean, echoing the playwright’s themes, characters and language while keeping the show accessible and irreverent.
The cast includes experienced theatrical and comedy improvisers with credits spanning Shakespeare’s Globe, The Maydays, Adventures of the Improvised Sherlock Holmes, Shakespeare for Breakfast, MusicBox, Red Rose Chain and more.
The show has age guidance of 12+ and a running time of 1 hour.
Ventnor Fringe takes place between 17th and 26th July 2026, transforming the town into a mix of pop-up venues, bars and performance spaces.
Tickets for Impromptu Shakespeare are priced between £10 and £20 and can be booked via the Ventnor Fringe website.
