Isle of Wight Council’s proposals to change governance arrangements from a “Leader & Cabinet model” to a “committee system” will be the subject of a public meeting at County Hall next week. The local authority’s public engagement event will provide a brief on the potential for a change to a committee system and to seek feedback from Island residents over the possible move that might see five committees set up covering:
- Policy, finance and resources committee
- Children’s Services, education and skills
- Adult social care, public health, and housing
- Economy, regeneration, transport, and infrastructure
- Environment and community protection
There would be no change to the various statutory committees such as Planning and Licensing. A detailed report will be considered at an extraordinary meeting of the council on 1st May. At that meeting the council could make a formal resolution to proceed with any changes and introduce them either at the annual council meeting on 15th May 2024, or May 2025. The public meeting will take place at County Hall at 18:00 on Monday 15th April in conference room 5. Those attending in person should arrive 10 minutes prior start time at reception in County Hall and there will be free parking in the County Hall car park. The meeting will also be accessible remotely.

Let’s discuss the exorbitant wages and pensions of council employees which on a rough guide is 25% of our council tax. Then let’s discuss any disadvantages there would be if we cull 50% of top earners over £75000.
My guess is no difference to the residents of the island.
Might want to check your figures before plucking figures out of the air…our council tax contributions are £103m. You’re suggesting that wages alone total ^£25m (pensions are from a contributory pot, offshored with interest) but without differentiation of roles, pay etc. Our TOTAL budget (incl. gov’t subsidies and business rates etc) is £408m. Maybe instead of ‘culling’ people (bit harsh, don’t you think?) we should tax at a far higher rate anyone over £75k. At present, it’s basic 20% up to £50k, then the next £25k at 40%. If over that it was 80% it would a) discourage superwages, and b) generate tax revenue where it is more easily afford. Who needs more than ‘enough’???
Work hard and they take more…
No doubt this will result in these already very expensive and useless councillors receiving even more ‘expenses ‘
I would like to discuss the following:-
Why does the IW charge one of the most expensive Council taxes in the country.
Why does IW charge the most expensive green waste charges in the country.
Why do we have to pay 50p to use public toilets.
Why do we have to pay 24/7 364 days a year parking charges.
I could go on, this is just for starters.
You wouldn’t be able to, this meeting is now’t to do with any of that.
This will be a fiasco, like everything else this lot do, may I suggest the police wait outside once the meeting is over so they can catch even more council drink drivers. Jordan will have his bottle opened before the meeting starts. Finishing time is at 9pm, god forbid it over runs by even a minute.
This is a public meeting, for information, not a full council vote.
This is just a rather expensive way of rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
Don’t bother IWC are just playing games .. and have no interest in public opinions.. they never listen if they did .. they would have all resigned by now
