Plans to redevelop a public toilet block on Sandown seafront have fallen through after 4 years. The Isle of Wight Council is now considering its options for the closed Pier Street toilets to determine what it will do next. The toilets opposite Sandown Pier have been earmarked for redevelopment for nearly 4 years, turning it into cafe and shop with improved toilet facilities. Plans had been approved and a preferred developer chosen but issues around the work required to the public space in front of the building held up plans. The council said in October last year that it was committed to the redevelopment for both residents and visitors and was working with partners to achieve the redevelopment as soon as possible. In a recent update, however, the authority confirmed the developer withdrew their interest after receiving a final price from builders to carry out the works.
The preferred developer — not named for commercially sensitive reasons — had been in the prime position for the redevelopment since July 2021 but during the following years no contracts or sale of the land was completed despite the council’s wishes. The planning permission has now also expired, leaving the authority to consider its options with councillors and a question mark hanging over the project. The toilets, while in an outdated condition, have been re-opened during the Summer and for events to provide public facilities in the town.

only get vandalised, scummy kids everywhere
Along with grubby oap’s who drink drive apparently!.
Paying people to breed has resulted in more unwanted, ill bought up feral children being born, as their parent and even sometimes parents, get a free house, free c.tax, large amount more of money per week, free dental care prescriptions, extra heating food allowance etc, JUST for emptying a womb.
What could possibly go wrong with paying the most unsuitable of society to breed, and live as well and oft better than the hard working people? What sort of an impression does it give to the unwanted, unloved state funded children? Not to bother at school, to do what they feel, and breed at puberty and get given the same as their parent (s).
Hence we are in this growing mess. SEE the reasons.
No doubt the developer grew tired of the councils incompetence, bureaucracy and brown envelope demands.
Glad that you have admitted this happens Mr Jordan.
Likely only be smashed to bits. Keep public loo’s basic, as IF you are desperate most anything will ‘do’.
Usual IW issue, big ideas but shallow pockets!
Probably best that the developers walked away before anything actually got started.
Typical so no bogs ill just pee and poo by then all then..the one’s at hinks cafe been broken since january never to be fixed or reopened ..cost too much so his business suffers tourism affected why come here if you cannot go to a working toilet bloody discracefull in 2023.John has seen people just urinate..possibly worse by them as if you are caught out what do you do?? i contacted parish council ..ha don’t even bother getting back to me now.Everything on this old broken island is crap the roads towns mily road just being allowed to fall into the sea the floating turd 100s of thousands spent on it..all crap..but hey they pat each other on the back and take the monies..well done to you all..
I agree having a digestive illness I can’t go anywhere far from toilets. I need them or am house bound which effects my health more. Nasty ferral people vandalising them really makes it worse one day they could suffer as I do.
I was born here lots toilets hospitals fire statins police stations decent roads now we have nothing compared to then.
I’m sure that those above of they had a disability like I have wed have loos open asap instead our MP is using money on expenses and council haven’t got a clue with sandown they are too busy arguing with Facebook users.
Turdtown..sums it all up really
I thought it was a free car park for Pier staff.
Lol
just anther island slum that’s full of kids and drugs
The secret developer was MCM construction – who have also pulled out of doing the Shanklin Spa development (this was done in secrecy as well).
I like your style chris well said.
Sandown is sadly a dump .. needs knocking down and rebuilding
That is EXACTLY what the Council and its tickled PINK developers want. Run it down, bill doze and build luxury apartments and hutches for the plebs along the entire sea frontage. Masons get their way
Sounds excellent to me.
And infinitely preferable to the relic of the past it is currently. And yes, I’m a Sandown resident. Progress or die. It’s dying.
“Plebs” in luxury flats pay council tax, spend money in local cafes and restaurants and employ tradespeople.
Yep, sounds excellent to me.
Probably realise the only trade they will get is the 6 week tourist season,,a lot of cafes shut by 2 as sandown is so rundown locals don’t bother anymore
Jesus Christ! 4 years to decide on a block of effing toilets!? Then for it to fall through. THIS is the EXACT reason why China and other countries are well ahead of us now. It’s embarrassing how this country operates.
It’s almost like the council is trying to shut sandown once and for all, there must be some kind of reason behind the scenes as to why they keep blocking progress on developing businesses.
