A man in his 50s has tragically died just days before Christmas after being hit by a motorcycle whilst seemingly crossing the road on the outskirts of Newport this morning (Thursday).
It was just before 05:50 – in darkness – that the fatal collision between a white motorcycle and a pedestrian occurred on the A3020 Horsebridge Hill, near the junction with Noke Common.
Emergency services responded to the scene and carried out CPR at the roadside but, despite their best efforts, the man’s life could not be saved and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim has not been formally identified at this time.
The motorcyclist, a male in his 30s, has suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and is being treated at St Mary’s Hospital.
Officers from the mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit are now on scene at Horsebridge Hill conducting a forensic examination of the crash scene, as they try to piece together the tragic events of this morning.
The main Newport to Cowes road is expected to remain closed throughout most of the day. Motorists are being diverted via Whitehouse Road in both directions.
Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this collision, and in particular anyone with relevant dash cam, doorbell, or CCTV footage.

It was nearly 3 years ago that a 61-year-old man from Ventnor died after being struck by a car on Horsebridge Hill.
Today’s incident is the third killed or seriously injured (KSI) incident on the Island so far this month, with a motorcyclist seriously injured on Medina Way in Newport on 12th December and a cyclist seriously injured on the Esplanade in Ryde on 11th December.
UPDATE @ 13:45 – Horsebridge Hill has now re-opened in both directions.
Dreadful so sad for all involved.
Absolutely heartbreaking . Thoughts with the family and friends who have lost their loved one as well as the motorcyclist.
Very sad news.
It’s about time the island rolled out islandwide CCTV
it is 2024, the island is so behind the times with
technology.
Best way to see what is happening.
The most dangerous Roads in England.
Road Safety needs to be addressed by IW Council
It is not the roads ,only the people that use them . In 60 odd years I have not had a proble
That is very true.
IW Council have a duty of care to make our roads
Safe.
Everyday I see idiots speeding, whether in Vans, Cars or
Bikes
DOES IW COUNCIL WORKERS WALK OR DRIVE AROUND
BLINDFOLDED
Make our roads safe to STOP idiots breaking the law.
This im sure is different, one of them made a mistake at the lights..it will come out.
I doubt it will, nothing ever comes out.
I would like to say something to all of you that have made a comment on this page, I agree with you, but you as Islanders living there and using the roads, write directly to the council and make them know of how you feel and suggest what needs to be done. I doubt that anyone at the council read your comments, if that is the case, Harass your councillors. Keep on at the Chief Constable and that waste of space, Police Commissioner. It’s what they are elected, by YOU, to do things to improve the Island, including saving needless death’s on the Islands roads. Finally, I would like to wish all of you and your families a happy and healthy Christmas and New Year.
Council and Councillors are as much use as
an empty packet of crisps.
We can all see what needs doing to make island roads
safe, the authorities don’t care!.
Merry Christmas to you and your family too and
have an Happy Healthy Prosperous New Year.
