A 61-year-old man from Ventnor has tragically died after being struck by a Range Rover on the main Newport to Cowes road at Parkhurst last night (Thursday).
As previously reported by Island Echo, emergency services were called to the collision on Parkhurst Road – close to the junction with Partridge Road – at just before 23:00.
As well as local Police and paramedics, the Thames Valley Air Ambulance was scrambled to the scene, landing at nearby St Mary’s Hospital. CPR was given to the injured male and he was taken to hospital in a critical condition, but died a short time later.
Next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
Investigations into the exact circumstances of the collision are ongoing but it’s understood the victim was crossing the road, in some form, when he was hit by the large 4×4 as it was travelling towards Newport.
Police Sergeant Steven Phillips has said:
“We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen either a white Range Rover or a man walking along Parkhurst Road at time of the incident. Likewise, we would like to appeal for anyone that may have dash cam footage from that area to come forward.
“Any information you may have, no matter how small or insignificant you believe it to be, could really help aid our investigation.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Police on 101, quoting 44220077425 or Operation Unify. Alternatively, you can contact independent charity, Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Parkhurst Road/Horsebridge Hill has now reopened in both directions following the conclusion of on scene investigations. The road was closed for around 6 hours, re-opening at around 05:00 this morning.

Some years ago the Conservative Council agreed to reduce the speed limit on that stretch of road; why wasn’t it implicated?
So sorry for all involved and the loss of a life is tragic so so sad
