The main road between Newport and Cowes has been closed by Police following a serious, life-threatening collision involving a pedestrian and a car at Parkhurst.
Flying doctors from Thames Valley Air Ambulance have been scrambled to the scene of the incident near the junction with Partridge Road at the bottom of Horsebridge Hill.
Emergency services were alerted to collision, which has involved a white Range Rover travelling towards Newport, at just before 23:00.
A cordon has been erected around the crash scene indicating the severity of the injuries sustained.
Motorists are unable to pass the scene and are therefore having to divert via Whitehouse Road and Forest Road in both directions. This is the same for Route 1 buses.
The road is to remain closed overnight and should re-open by the morning rush hour.
UPDATE @ 00:30 – The Thames Valley Air Ambulance has lifted off from the helipad at nearby St Mary’s Hospital, but has not conveyed any patients.
The helicopter and it’s crew are returning to base at RAF Benson.
UPDATE FRIDAY @ 07:00 – Parkhurst Road has now reopened in both directions.
An update from Hampshire Constabulary is expected later this morning.

People drive faster along there now there’s no speed cameras, there’s a housing estate right there!!
People only used to slow down for the camera’s, then speed up again, so they are pointless anyway
The averaging speed cameras are a better weapon to catch speeding vehicles. You can’t defeat them.
Ideal for sections of the Newport Cowes road .
Yes but when the cameras did work people slowed up past them then sped up again so you can’t blame not having cameras there I hope the person is ok
We live on this road, its a rat race right from Coppins Bridge through to Horsebridge Hill. You can see the ‘40mph’ sign outside of St Mary’s flashing almost every other car; I can see why cyclists ride on the payment on that stretch of road. We have even seen motorcycles doing ‘wheelies’ along by the prison entrance.
I’ve seen a few drive through the red lights when people are crossing too!
R.I.P you poor soul.
Obviously I don’t know the circumstances in which this particular accident occurred, but,it is getting dangerous on the Islands roads, and even on pavements, you have to take care and be cautious and alert especially on busy roads and watch out on Country lanes..Poor devil,
If I recall some years ago, the conservative council agreed to lower the speed restriction on that stretch of road; but as usual nothing was done about it.
sorry to hear the gentleman passed. but i wonder if the range rover driver is the same idiot that drives around East Cowes at 100mph everywhere he goes
