Collision investigators from the mainland have been called in to examine the scene of a crash in Ryde which has left a cyclist in his 70s with serious injuries.
It was just before 11:00 this morning (Wednesday) that emergency services were called to the Esplanade following reports of a collision between a Mercedes A-Class car and a fold-up type bicycle.
The rider, a man in his 70s, was seriously injured and has since been airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. The helicopter landed on the pad at Hovertravel’s Ryde terminal.
Enquiries into the exact circumstances of the collision are ongoing, with officers from the Collision Investigation Unit now on scene carrying out a full forensic examination.
A road closure remains in force on the westbound carriageway between Dover Street and George Street.
